Super 11 in Michigan, February Week 1 - Class of 2015 D1 Signing Day Edition

Published
02/02/2015

This Wednesday is National Signing Day, players across the country will be signing their letters of intent for which school they would like to continue their careers as student-athletes. The D Zone's Evan Paputa released his top 20 prospects in the state earlier this Winter and also in the past, The D Zone's founding father, Jeff Corrion has ranked every commit in the Class of 2015, awarding "Lakes" instead of "Stars" but that will be changing this year as we move to the Super 11. This weeks Super 11 will be solely on the Class of 2015 as well as other surprises since it's our Signing Day Edition week.

Enjoy!

1. Mike Weber - Cass Tech - RB - 17 offers

If you read last weeks inaugural Super 11, you seen that we selected Cass Tech's RB Mike Weber as the top player for the Super 11. So for the final Class of 2015 rankings, Weber sits atop the throne and like he does in the pads during the Fall, he shakes would-be tacklers off just like he's shaken the guys below him. Mike Weber committed to Ohio State over; Alabama, Michigan, and Michigan State. The one time Michigan commit would likely cause the internet to shutdown for a few minutes if he switched to Michigan on Wednesday but it appears he'll be making web administrators happy along with the Buckeye fans.

2. Alex Malzone - Brother Rice - QB - 10 offers

Malzone enrolled early at the University of Michigan and will compete with former CHSL-Central rival, Shane Morris for the starting QB position in 2015. Malzone is a cool and calm pocket passer with a deceptive amount of mobility. Malzone wasn't able to lead the Warriors to their 3rd straight state championship but he had already left his mark and legacy at Brother Rice. Malzone and his laser precision arm will be no fading memory for the Warriors faithful and the Wolverine faithful will soon find out he's the #2 player in the state. How about a pause to think about Malzone's loyalty to Michigan, unlike other's, he never wavered nor committed elsewhere before committing to Michigan, when he could of easily done that.

3. John Kelly - Oak Park - RB - 11 offers

It's not every day that a Michigan High School player gets offered to play in the SEC, then add to the equation its rare, so rare it has been since 2013 that a Michigan player signed with an SEC school and you can count the ones who did on a hand. Kelly took advantage of the opportunity to commit to the University of Tennessee instead of staying in the Midwest. Kelly who is an explosive RB with balance, strength and vision will fit in just fine at Rocky Top. Kelly also plays defensive back but following his week 1 performance that he shredded Cass Tech's star studded defense, you had to expect offense would be his future and sure enough it is!

4. Kyonta Stallworth - Detroit King - OL/DL - 7 offers

Things quickly picked up for Kyonta Stallworth in February 2013 when UCLA became the first to offer, in April - Florida offered and in June - Michigan State opened the door for Stallworth. Just 2 months later on an unofficial visit to MSU, Stallworth and Cass Tech QB Jayru Campbell would commit to Michigan State, Stallworth took the door MSU gave him, put new locks in the door so that no other school could get him to flip from his Spartans pledge. Even an offer from Alabama in February 2014 couldn't break his commitment. During Stallworth's senior season at Detroit King, he helped protect and provide Junior's, QB - Mikale Washington and WR - Donnie Corley a huge season.

5. RayShawn Wilborn - Lansing Sexton - WR/LB - 4 offers

There comes a time where there is bias and then there is blatant bias. Unfortunately by Wilborn being committed to Central Michigan and coming from the exposureless part of the state beyond the Metro Detroit area, it was hard for Wilborn's name to get out. When we found out soon after that the 6'4" 205 lbs Titan had committed, we knew right there, Wilborn would be slept on. 18 bone crushing sacks during his junior paved the way for a huge senior season that saw Wilborn stronger at Wide Receiver. San Diego State and Wyoming offered following the season but the Chippewa's scouting and faith in Wilborn could pay off with a huge relief of breath once Wilborn's letter of intent arrives on Wednesday.

6. Tyriq Thompson - Detroit King - LB - 13 offers

Tyriq Thompson is the son of a former Wolverine great, Clarence Thompson. But Tyriq looked to carve his own legacy at the high school level and did just that, by earning 13 offers before shocking the Wolverine faithful and committing to play in East Lansing at Michigan State. Thompson committed to MSU in August and a few months later signed his forms to enroll early at MSU and is looking to develop more this Spring to be ready for the Fall, where his instincts and ball tracking ability could possibly have him playing as a True Freshman.

7. Grant Perry - Brother Rice - WR - 10 offers

You think you know underrated? If you do, you must surely know that Grant Perry could be the most underrated receiver in the USA! Following over 1,700 receiving yards, 20+ touchdowns, and so many clutch catches to count, Perry worked with Malzone to form an unbelievable duo who were on page so much that they could have formed a 1,700 page book and published it. As this was initially published, Perry had not received any contact with Michigan but that all changed when Michigan offered and Perry quickly committed to rejoin his 3 teammates.

8. Brian Cole - Saginaw Heritage - WR/DB - 8 offers

Michigan was the first school to offer the Heritage ATH and that would be Cole's last words in recruiting that he would commit and then enroll early at Michigan. Cole has all the makings of a high rated player and that's apparent by his rankings across all the scouting services but the Hawks and Cole struggled to win in what was a weak SVL-Blue division. Cole will look to have his raw athleticism polished up by Michigan's new coaching staff, as he's gotten a head start by enrolling early at Michigan.

9. Josh Alabi - Cass Tech - OT - 9 offers

Alabi has been a mainstay on Cass Tech's dominant run the past few years and learned behind David Dawson his sophomore year before holding down the LT position his final 2 years as the Technicians reached the semi-finals both years. The 6'5" 285 lbs lineman is committed to Ohio State and did that following their camp over the summer. One aspect of Alabi's game that hasn't been highlighted was his leadership. Often times during a game following a holding penalty on a receiver when they return to a huddle, there will be a few exchanged words. Alabi instead would run over and give pointers on blocking techniques while the referee's marked the penalty, coaches often refer to coaches on the field but for a Lineman that's rare.

10. Dior Johnson - Southfield - WR/DB - 16 offers

Mostly at least one of every MAC program thought they were getting a steal by offering Johnson as most of his offers are from MAC schools and then Wake Forest offered. Illinois followed, Indiana followed, and then Johnson made his commitment to the Demon Deacons, up until last week Johnson was committed to Wake Forest before Minnesota offered and then Johnson flipped his commitment to the Golden Golphers. Johnson is projected to play defensive back with ball hawk mentality and range. However following his senior season, his receiver skills are glaring and we could see a college utilizing Johnson on offense for a much needed vertical threat.

11. Cole Chewins - Clarkston - OT/TE - 7 offers

Michigan State wanted to get involved with Chewins and offered a grayshirt offer, which means he'll be committed to enroll at Michigan State, can work with the team in the Fall but won't officially join the team until next Spring. It's a high risk, high reward type deal especially for a, "wanted player" like Chewins with 7 offers and was committed to Miami University, Ohio since June but the Spartans picked up a key piece and one that will pay off big time as Chewins has all the makings of developing into a great collegiate football player. Chewins who was a TE prior to this year, filled in for an injury on Clarkston's OL at LT and the Wolves didn't skip a beat with 14 straight wins this year, winning Division 1 again vs. Saline. Chewins team first mentality is all you really needed to know that he will be a great football player.
